Choose Online 1v1 on the main menu, then create a private room. The lobby shows a room code and an invitation link you can copy. Send either to your friend. They can open the invitation link or enter the room code in the online menu. Each player uses their own browser and chooses a nickname. The lobby is the place to check that both of you have arrived before the battle begins.
For two new players, a useful first match is simply to build a barracks, train a small army and find the opposing base. The winner is the player who destroys the enemy town center. Once both players understand that loop, add a second-age army or use a different route across the map. Training and the tutorial are available if one player wants to practice the controls before the next private match.
The game runs in a desktop browser with a mouse and keyboard, so there is no game client to install before creating a private match. You can begin with a guest nickname. Guest profile information and local match history are stored in that browser; clearing its storage can remove those records. An account provides a separate home for eligible online results and monthly Elo. A friendly private match does not need to become a ranked session.
Both sides begin with the same resource amounts, a town center, eight workers and one scout. Resources are arranged symmetrically across the battlefield. You decide how much to invest in the economy, what troops to train and when to attack. Watch your friend's composition: cavalry threatens exposed archers, spears discourage cavalry, and archers punish unsupported spears. A smaller army that answers the enemy can be more useful than a larger group of the wrong unit.
After a match, both players can accept a rematch from the result screen. Private matches can continue as a best-of-three series, with the score shown as you play. The next round gives you a chance to change your opening rather than repeat the same mistake. You can try a different army, defend a route you ignored, or spend less on buildings so that your first force arrives together.
Leave the game tab open while the battle is running. If your connection drops, return to the same site and browser promptly so the saved match session can reconnect while its return window is open. Online play continues on the server and cannot be paused like a training match. If you need to leave for longer, use the game's match controls rather than assuming that closing the tab will pause the fight.
