Spears hold the frontline, archers work from behind it, and cavalry moves quickly between targets. Siege units have larger, distinct silhouettes, while each building carries a symbol for its role. Team colors help separate the two armies when they meet. Selecting a unit or building opens its information in the HUD, so you can inspect health, combat statistics, production and available commands without leaving the battlefield.
The map set changes the routes worth watching. Open ground leaves room to go around a slow frontline. The two-pass map uses a rocky ridge to channel movement through two crossings. The central-gold map brings important outer gold deposits closer to the middle. Scout before committing an army: a route that protects archers may delay cavalry, and a defended crossing can leave another approach exposed.
The line formation places frontline troops ahead of ranged support. The box keeps vulnerable units toward the center, while spread formation creates space against area damage. The two-wing formation opens a wider middle gap. A formation is a starting arrangement, not a substitute for reading the fight. If enemy cavalry gets around your spears, pull the archers back and bring the frontline between them again.
Stone walls and closely placed buildings can block movement. Use them to narrow an approach or protect workers, but leave a workable exit for your own army. A tower can cover a nearby resource line, while a gathering camp shortens the trips workers make to deposit resources. Base layout connects economy and defense: a safe, short route is easier to protect than workers scattered around several distant deposits.
Explored ground stays visible under the fog, but current vision is needed to see enemy movement. A cleared-looking route may have changed since the scout last passed through it. Use the minimap to move the camera and watch both the army and the base. Pressuring a resource line can force an opponent to move workers or split troops even when your force is too small to destroy the town center.
The second age adds rams, onagers, scorpions and monks to the core army. A ram gives an attack a building-breaking purpose, but needs escorts against melee units. An onager threatens a packed formation and must be aimed with friendly troops in mind. A monk can heal or attempt a unit conversion from behind protection. These additions deepen an army's choices while the match still revolves around the same four resources and one opposing town center.
